Soil Safe Helps Keep Delaware River Port Facility Operating

In 2010, excessive silt buildup at their dock in Trainer, PA was impacting ConocoPhillips shipping activity on the Delaware River. The only private dredge disposal facility on the Delaware River was tied up in litigation following a transfer of ownership making dredge disposal very difficult.

Soil Safe secured licenses from USACE and permits from NJDEP to remove 360,000 cyds of dredge from the Pedricktown Dredge Disposal Site, allowing Conoco to place a like quantity of dredge excavated from its refinery berth in the hole created by Soil Safe at Pedricktown.

Soil Safe excavated, trucked, and processed the “landed” dredge at its Logan Facility, mixing it with Soil Safe’s Recycled Soil Product in accordance with predetermined ratios to make a manufactured topsoil. The select material met all residential criteria and provided a superior soil media for growing grasses.

The topsoil was used (spread, graded, fertilized and hydroseeded) on areas of the Logan Facility and the GCIA horse park that had been filled to grade to create a vegetative layer over the remediated properties.

The two-year project and its permits/licenses were renewed several times to provide the volume Conoco required.

The material has been in use for 5 growing seasons as is performing exceptionally well. The mixture of Soil Safe Product and dredge provides organics and the proper pH for native grasses and other species widely used for erosion control.
